RRB Section Controller Exam Pattern 2026 — CEN 03/2026
Single-stage CBT • Computer Based Aptitude Test • Qualifying marks and final merit
The RRB Section Controller selection process combines a subject-based CBT with a separate aptitude test. Understanding the difference between minimum qualifying marks, shortlisting and final merit helps candidates interpret their performance correctly. This guide follows paragraphs 16.1–16.3 of the official 2026 notification.
Selection Stages
| Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 1. Single-stage CBT | Tests the notified subjects and provides merit scores for CBAT shortlisting |
| 2. CBAT | Assesses aptitude through test batteries; each battery must be qualified |
| 3. Document Verification | Checks educational, age, community and other eligibility claims against original documents |
| 4. Medical Examination | Determines fitness for the notified A-2 standard and applicable provisions |
There is one subject-based CBT in this recruitment, followed by CBAT. CBAT is an aptitude stage, not a second copy of the CBT syllabus. Appointment is subject to completion of the notified selection and verification requirements.
CBT Pattern and Subject Distribution
| Subject | Indicative questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical and Mathematical Capability | 60 | 60 |
| Logical Capability | 20 | 20 |
| Mental Reasoning | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
| Feature | Official provision |
|---|---|
| Question format | Objective multiple-choice |
| Standard duration | 120 minutes |
| Correct answer | +1 mark |
| Incorrect answer | −1/3 mark |
| Multiple-shift examinations | Normalisation applies |
| Section distribution | Indicative; the actual paper may vary |
The analytical group includes Mathematics and Data Analysis. Logical Capability includes Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension. The 2026 notification explicitly specifies English for comprehension passages and questions. See the separate syllabus guide for the full topic list.
Eligible candidates covered by the CEN's scribe/compensatory-time provisions may receive 20 additional minutes per examination hour, subject to the specified conditions. This is an eligibility-based provision and does not automatically apply to every candidate.
CBT Marking: Worked Example
For a practice score calculation, assume 72 answers are correct, 18 are wrong and 10 are unanswered. Marks from correct answers are 72. The penalty is 18 ÷ 3 = 6. The resulting raw score is 66 out of 100. This is an arithmetic illustration; RRB's official result, final answer key and normalisation govern the actual score.
A high attempt count is not enough if too many answers are incorrect. During mock review, track accuracy as well as speed. Use the official fraction of one-third for precise calculations instead of repeatedly rounding it to 0.33.
Minimum CBT Qualifying Marks
| Community | Minimum qualifying percentage |
|---|---|
| UR | 40% |
| EWS | 40% |
| OBC-NCL | 30% |
| SC | 30% |
| ST | 25% |
The applicable community requirement also applies to Ex-Servicemen. These thresholds establish minimum eligibility; they are not the final cut-off for selection or a guarantee of a CBAT call. The CEN contains a conditional relaxation provision for PwBD candidates in the circumstances specified there.
Shortlisting for CBAT
Paragraph 16.2 provides for shortlisting candidates equal to eight times the vacancies from each listed community, based on CBT performance. Read the shortlist issued by the relevant RRB for the actual candidates called. Meeting the minimum CBT percentage does not itself ensure shortlisting.
CBAT Pattern and Qualifying Rules
| Feature | Rule |
|---|---|
| Language | English and Hindi |
| Minimum standard | T-score of at least 42 in every test battery |
| Category relaxation in T-score | None under the notified rule |
| Negative marking | None |
| Qualifying requirement | Every battery must be qualified |
| Vision certificate | Original applicable Annexure VI / VI-A certificate required on CBAT day |
| Battery guidance | Use RDSO Psychology–Candidate's Corner and official mock instructions |
A T-score is not a raw percentage. Do not interpret 42 as 42% or assume that a strong score in one battery compensates for failing another. The CEN's qualifying requirement applies individually to each battery.
The main CEN does not provide a fixed detailed battery-wise timetable in this section. Candidates should follow the official CBAT instructions issued for Section Controller and avoid carrying over counts or timings from another Railway examination.
Final Merit, Tie-breaking and Verification
Among candidates who qualify CBAT, the final merit calculation gives 70% weightage to CBT and 30% to CBAT. This weighting must not be confused with the CBT's 60:20:20 subject distribution. Raw CBT marks alone are not the complete final selection score.
Candidates equal to the vacancies are called for document verification according to merit and railway options. If scores are tied, the CEN gives priority to the older candidate; if age is also equal, alphabetical order of the given name is used. Final appointment depends on satisfactory document, medical and other prescribed checks.
