Overview

FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) is a flagship scheme to promote electric mobility. Launched in 2015 as part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP), it incentivises the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, curb vehicular pollution and encourage domestic manufacturing of EVs and their components.

Key Objectives

  • Promote faster adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Provide demand incentives to reduce the upfront cost of EVs
  • Develop charging infrastructure across the country
  • Encourage domestic EV manufacturing and reduce oil import dependence

Salient Features

The scheme has been rolled out in phases. FAME-I (2015) focused on technology development, demand creation, pilot projects and charging infrastructure. FAME-II (from 2019) significantly expanded the outlay, prioritising electrification of public and shared transport — including e-buses, e-3-wheelers, e-4-wheelers and e-2-wheelers — along with the creation of charging stations. Subsequent schemes have continued this push for electric mobility.
