The Swachh Bharat Mission (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) was launched on 2 October 2014, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. It is a nationwide cleanliness campaign with the primary objective of eliminating open defecation, improving solid waste management and bringing about behavioural change towards sanitation across India.
