The Civil Services Examination is a national-level competitive exam conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is used to recruit officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and other Group A and Group B central services. The exam consists of three stages — Prelims, Mains, and a Personality Test (Interview). It is widely regarded as one of the toughest exams in India, with lakhs of candidates appearing every year for a limited number of vacancies.

To appear for the UPSC Civil Services Exam, a candidate must be an Indian citizen (with some relaxations for OCI/PIO for certain services), hold a graduation degree from a recognized university in any discipline, and be between 21 to 32 years of age as on 1st August of the exam year. Age relaxation is available for reserved categories — OBC candidates get 3 extra years, SC/ST candidates get 5 years, and PwBD candidates get 10 years. General category candidates are allowed a maximum of 6 attempts

The UPSC Civil Services Exam is a central-level examination for All India Services and Central Services, while the RAS (Rajasthan Administrative Service) Exam is a state-level exam conducted by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) for state government posts. Both exams follow a three-stage selection process, but the syllabus differs — RAS gives significant weightage to Rajasthan-specific topics such as state history, geography, polity, and art and culture. Many aspirants prepare for both exams simultaneously due to overlapping general studies content.

Most successful candidates dedicate 12 to 18 months of focused preparation to clear the Civil Services Exam. However, the actual time depends on your educational background, familiarity with the syllabus, and daily study hours. A well-structured study plan covering NCERT basics, standard reference books, current affairs, and regular answer writing practice is essential. Aspirants who start early and maintain consistency tend to perform better across all three stages of the examination.

The UPSC Prelims consists of two papers — General Studies Paper I and CSAT (Paper II). Paper I covers Indian History, Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economy, Environment and Ecology, General Science, and Current Affairs. Paper II (CSAT) tests Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Ability, Decision Making, and Basic Numeracy — it is qualifying in nature with a minimum cutoff of 33%. For Prelims success, focus heavily on current affairs from the last 12 months, NCERT foundation, and practicing previous year question papers to understand UPSC's question pattern.
