The e-Shram portal was launched in 2021 to create the first-ever National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW), seeded with Aadhaar. Each registered worker receives a unique 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) and an e-Shram card, enabling them to access social-security and welfare benefits and giving the government real-time data to deliver schemes to informal workers.
