The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched on 15 August 2019 with the goal of providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) — popularly called "Har Ghar Jal" — to every rural household in India. It focuses on supplying safe and adequate drinking water on a regular and long-term basis.

Key Features & Objectives
- Provide piped tap water supply to every rural home at the rate of 55 litres per capita per day.
- Prioritise water-stressed areas, aspirational districts and quality-affected habitations.
- Promote community participation through Village Water and Sanitation Committees (Pani Samitis).
- Ensure source sustainability through rainwater harvesting and greywater management.
- JJM is implemented by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- At launch, only about 3 crore (17%) of rural households had tap water connections; the mission greatly expanded coverage.
- An urban counterpart, the Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban), was announced to provide tap connections in urban areas.
