Overview

The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 with a total outlay of ₹19,744 crore. Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water through electrolysis using electricity generated from renewable sources, making it a clean fuel with no carbon emissions. The mission aims to position India as a leading producer and supplier of green hydrogen, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, and support the nation’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. It seeks to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as refining, fertilisers, steel and heavy transport.

  • Develop green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum by 2030.
  • Add about 125 GW of renewable energy capacity associated with green hydrogen production.
  • The SIGHT programme (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) provides incentives for electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production.
  • Reduce nearly ₹1 lakh crore worth of fossil fuel imports and abate around 50 MMT of CO2 emissions per year by 2030.
  • Create over 6 lakh jobs and attract large-scale private investment in the clean-energy ecosystem.
