Overview
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a centrally sponsored maternity benefit scheme launched in 2017 under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. It provides a cash incentive of ₹5,000 in instalments to pregnant women and lactating mothers for the birth of their first living child, to partially compensate for wage loss and to encourage proper rest and nutrition. The scheme also promotes institutional delivery and early registration of pregnancy. Under PMMVY 2.0, an additional incentive is provided for the second child if it is a girl, to discourage gender bias and promote the girl child.
