UGC NET Exam Pattern

The exam has two papers conducted in a single session of 3 hours without a break. Both papers are objective and consist of multiple choice questions.

No Negative Marking: UGC NET has no negative marking in either Paper 1 or Paper 2. Each correct answer carries 2 marks and no marks are deducted for wrong answers, so candidates should attempt all questions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Educational: Master degree (or equivalent) with at least 55% marks for General/EWS candidates.
  • Relaxation: 50% marks for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and Transgender candidates.
  • Age (JRF): Generally up to 30 years (with relaxations); there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility.
  • Candidates in the final year of their Master degree can also apply provisionally.

Qualifying & Cut-Off Process

Candidates must obtain the minimum aggregate marks (40% for General, 35% for reserved categories) combining both papers to be considered. The final merit cut-off for qualifying as Assistant Professor and JRF is decided category-wise and subject-wise based on the top percentile (around the top 6% of candidates).
