Andhra Pradesh Approves Treated Wastewater Reuse Policy
On 26 June 2026, Andhra Pradesh approved the Policy on Reuse of Treated Used Water, 2026. It covers 123 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and provides a framework for the collection, treatment, allocation, pricing, monitoring and reuse of treated wastewater.
What is Treated Wastewater Reuse?
Treated wastewater is sewage water processed at a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and reused for non-potable purposes such as industrial processes, construction, landscaping, municipal services, firefighting, railway yards and bus depots.
Phased Targets
The policy sets staged targets of 20 ULBs by 2027, 40 by 2028, 90 by 2029 and all 123 by 2030. At least 20% of urban water demand is to be met through reuse. For industries, reuse is mandated at 20% by 2028 and 40% by 2030.
Industrial Norms and Pricing
Specific conditions apply to thermal power plants within 50 km of STPs and to industries with water demand above 10 KLD (kilolitres per day) within 10 km of ULBs. Treated water will be priced as a commodity, linking revenue for ULBs to public-private partnerships in reuse infrastructure.
