The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced that it will establish India’s first dedicated High-Altitude Medicine Centre at Keylong, the administrative headquarters of the Lahaul & Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an elevation of roughly 3,080 metres above sea level, Keylong offers an ideal natural laboratory for studying how the human body responds to the physiological stress of thin air, low oxygen (hypoxia) and extreme cold. The centre marks a significant institutional step because, until now, India has lacked a permanent, research-focused facility devoted exclusively to the science and clinical management of illnesses that strike at high elevations.
Medically, any location above 2,500 metres is classified as high altitude, and rapid ascent to such heights can trigger a spectrum of disorders collectively known as altitude sickness. The mildest and most common form is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), marked by headache, nausea, fatigue and disturbed sleep. If untreated, it can progress to two life-threatening emergencies: High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), in which fluid accumulates in the lungs, and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), in which the brain swells. The new centre aims to build clinical protocols for early diagnosis, acclimatisation and treatment, while also generating India-specific data instead of relying on foreign research drawn from different populations and terrains.
The initiative carries strategic as well as public-health value. India maintains a large military presence along its northern and eastern high-altitude frontiers, including Siachen, Ladakh and the Himalayan borders, where troops routinely operate above 4,000 metres. The centre is expected to collaborate with the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), complementing existing bodies such as DRDO’s Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR). For local communities and the growing number of pilgrims, trekkers and tourists visiting Himalayan destinations, the facility promises better emergency care, awareness of safe ascent practices and reduced fatalities from preventable altitude emergencies.
Historically, the ICMR is one of the world’s oldest medical research bodies, founded in 1911 as the Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) and renamed the Indian Council of Medical Research in 1949. It functions as the apex body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research in India under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Keylong centre will integrate modern tools such as telemedicine, digital health records and drone-based delivery of medicines and diagnostic samples to overcome the region’s difficult terrain, and is planned in partnership with the Himachal Pradesh government, positioning India as a serious contributor to global high-altitude medical science.
