India Hosts 16th BRICS Health Ministers' Meeting

India hosted the 16th BRICS Health Ministers\u2019 Meeting in Chandigarh from 22 to 24 July 2026 under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The meeting brought together health ministers, senior officials and technical experts from the 11-member BRICS grouping, reaffirming the bloc\u2019s growing role in shaping global health cooperation.
BRICS is a grouping of major emerging economies that began as BRIC and became BRICS after South Africa joined in 2010. Following expansion in 2024 and 2025, the bloc now has 11 members \u2014 Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Indonesia \u2014 covering cooperation in health, trade, technology and development.
Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda chaired the Health Ministers\u2019 Meeting on 23 July 2026. Members unanimously adopted the 16th BRICS Health Ministerial Declaration, which addresses universal health coverage, pandemic preparedness, digital health and equitable access to medicines \u2014 priorities that resonate strongly with the developing world\u2019s health challenges.
A notable outcome was the launch of a BRICS initiative on mental wellness, with NIMHANS, Bengaluru named as the coordinating institution. NIMHANS is the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, a premier institute in Karnataka. BRICS also approved a working group on traditional medicine covering systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Unani and Siddha.
The meeting holds strategic and diplomatic significance for India. By steering the health agenda \u2014 including interoperable digital health infrastructure and responsible use of artificial intelligence \u2014 India strengthens its position as a voice of the Global South.
