India, China Discuss Gradual Normalisation of Ties

India and China discussed gradual normalisation of bilateral ties in New Delhi on 22 June 2026, when Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security. The two sides referred to progress in bilateral relations, while India and China kept communication channels on border issues open and generally stable.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the Doval-Wang Yi discussions as constructive and forward-looking. On 24 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Wang Yi and discussed high-level exchanges, practical cooperation, and common interests of Global South countries.

Wang Yi called for the restoration of dialogue mechanisms and cooperation in trade, finance, law enforcement, and media. He also stated that China and India should view each other as partners, not rivals, as a strategic consensus in bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan in 2024 and in Tianjin in 2025. The India-China normalisation process has included border disengagement, diplomatic exchanges, and meetings at the leadership level. Disengagement pacts at Depsang and Demchok were finalised in October 2024.
