India–Kyrgyzstan Launch ‘Manas and Mahabharata’ Civilizational Studies Centre 2026

An Indian delegation visited Kyrgyzstan (4–7 July 2026) to inaugurate the International Centre for Civilizational Studies “Manas and Mahabharata” in Bishkek. Detailed explainer.

An Indian delegation visited Kyrgyzstan from 4 to 7 July 2026 for the inauguration of the International Centre for Civilizational Studies “Manas and Mahabharata” in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek. The centre symbolises the deep civilizational and cultural links between India and Kyrgyzstan.

The centre is named after two great epics: the Manas, the national epic of the Kyrgyz people, and the Mahabharata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. Bringing these together highlights shared values of heroism, ethics and storytelling traditions across the two cultures.

Such cultural institutions strengthen people-to-people ties and soft power diplomacy. India and Kyrgyzstan are both part of regional groupings such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and cultural cooperation complements their political and economic engagement in Central Asia.

For India, deeper engagement with Central Asian countries is strategically important for connectivity, energy, security and countering extremism. Cultural centres like this one help build long-term goodwill and support India’s “Connect Central Asia” approach.
