India has taken a decisive step toward clean mobility by launching pilot trials for hydrogen fuel transport on 10 routes under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Sanctioned on 26 March 2025 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the pilot deploys 37 hydrogen-powered buses and trucks – of which 15 run on fuel cells and 22 on hydrogen internal combustion engines. The trials are designed to test how hydrogen vehicles perform under real Indian road, load and climate conditions, and represent one of the country’s most ambitious attempts to move heavy and public transport away from fossil fuels toward zero-emission alternatives.
At the heart of the project is the concept of hydrogen mobility – the use of hydrogen as a transport fuel. There are two broad technologies at play. In fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen reacts with oxygen in an electrochemical process to generate electricity that powers an electric motor, with water vapour as the only emission. In hydrogen internal combustion engines, conventional engines are modified to burn hydrogen directly. Because hydrogen is the lightest element (symbol H) and carries a high energy content per unit mass, it is especially attractive for long-haul trucks and buses where battery weight would otherwise be a limitation. The pilot deliberately tests both pathways to compare cost, efficiency and practicality.
The 10 trial corridors span diverse regions of the country, including Greater Noida-Delhi-Agra, Pune-Mumbai, Ahmedabad-Vadodara-Surat, Bhubaneswar-Konark-Puri, Sahibabad-Faridabad-Delhi, Jamshedpur-Kalinga Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi, Kochi-Edappally, Jamnagar-Ahmedabad and the NH-16 Visakhapatnam-Bayyavaram stretch. To support these operations, nine hydrogen refuelling stations will be established along the corridors, handling the storage, compression and dispensing of hydrogen fuel. Choosing a mix of industrial, tourist and high-traffic routes allows the government to gather varied performance data before any nationwide scale-up.
The pilot carries an estimated allocation of about ₹208 crore and is being implemented in partnership with major industry players including TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Ashok Leyland and Indian Oil. The initiative sits within India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make the country a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen – hydrogen made using renewable electricity, as opposed to grey hydrogen derived from fossil fuels. Beyond cutting carbon emissions and vehicular pollution, success in these trials could reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen energy security and position domestic manufacturers at the forefront of the emerging global hydrogen economy.
