Guardian of Biodiversity: Aizawl’s Natural History Museum Becomes India’s 21st Repository

The Natural History Museum at Mizoram University in Aizawl has been designated as India’s 21st repository under the Biological Diversity Act — a significant step toward documenting and scientifically preserving the rich biodiversity of the North-Eastern region.

The Union Environment Ministry announced on 7 July 2026, following a recommendation by the National Biodiversity Authority, that the Aizawl museum had been granted repository status under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, with effect from 19 June 2026. A designated repository is an authorised facility that keeps biological material in safe custody and serves as a legal registry for biological resources used in research and commercial activity. It preserves voucher specimens, the reference samples used for the identification and verification of species.

The museum will maintain voucher specimens of flora and fauna from Mizoram and the wider North-Eastern region. The listed flora includes pteridophytes and macrofungi, while the fauna covers reptiles, amphibians, fishes, moths, beetles and butterflies. It will additionally function as a depository for the type specimens of newly discovered species, which form the basis for describing and naming a new species.

Established in 2022 under Mizoram University, the museum lies within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, one of the world’s recognised biodiversity regions. Mizoram and the wider North-East host more than 7,500 species of flowering plants and over 2,000 faunal species. The recently described amphibian Leptobrachella tamdil from Mizoram reflects this biological richness, making a dedicated repository here especially relevant for science and conservation.
