India's dairy giant Amul has begun work on an ambitious integrated dairy project in West Bengal that is set to house the world's largest curd (dahi) manufacturing facility. The plant is coming up at the Howrah Food Park in Sankrail, Howrah district, within the Kolkata metropolitan region, and the foundation stone was laid at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, Kolkata. For a state with a huge base of milk producers, the project marks a major expansion of organised, value-added dairy processing in eastern India.

The scale of the project is striking. It is planned with an investment of around Rs 700 crore and is designed to process 30 lakh litres of milk per day when fully operational. Its curd and cultured-product output is expected to reach about 1,000 metric tonnes daily, which is what earns it the tag of the world's largest curd plant. Such a capacity places the facility among the biggest single-site dairy operations anywhere.

This will be a genuine multi-product dairy unit rather than a single-item plant. Alongside curd, its product range is planned to include paneer, ghee, sweets, flavoured milk and ice cream. Integrated dairy plants of this kind bring together milk reception, pasteurisation, processing, packaging and cold-chain handling under one roof, which improves efficiency, reduces wastage and helps maintain consistent quality across a wide product basket.

The project also strengthens the cooperative dairy model for which India is globally known. Amul is the brand of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), one of the country's most successful dairy cooperative networks. Dairy cooperatives connect individual milk producers with collection centres, processing plants and organised marketing, ensuring farmers get a fair, stable price while consumers get affordable, hygienic products.

Economically and socially, the plant promises significant gains. It can create direct and indirect employment across procurement, processing, logistics and retail, while giving Bengal's dairy farmers a large, reliable buyer for their milk. Greater organised processing also boosts farmer incomes, curbs distress sales and deepens the cold-chain infrastructure that eastern India has historically lacked compared with the western and northern dairy belts.

Strategically, the move signals the eastward spread of India's White Revolution success story. By anchoring a world-scale facility in West Bengal, Amul diversifies its production geography, shortens supply chains for eastern markets, and supports the government's broader push for food processing, value addition and rural prosperity.
