China Launches Gravity-1 Rocket with Nine Satellites

China successfully launched its Gravity-1 carrier rocket on 22 July 2026, placing nine satellites into their intended orbits. The lift-off occurred at 10:54 a.m. Beijing time from a maritime launch platform in the East China Sea, to the east of Shanghai, marking another milestone for the country’s expanding commercial space sector.

Gravity-1 is a solid-fuel carrier rocket developed by Orienspace, a private Chinese commercial launch firm. Described as the world’s most powerful solid-fuel rocket, it has now completed its third successful flight. Solid-fuel vehicles are valued for their simplicity, rapid readiness and ability to be stored for long periods, which makes them attractive for responsive commercial launch services.

The mission carried a diverse payload of nine satellites, including several Dongpo units (Dongpo-13, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20) designed for all-weather, round-the-clock Earth observation, along with Xiguang-2 01, Tianyi-49 and Lilac-3 (also called Zidingxiang-3). These satellites support applications such as mineral prospecting, agriculture, forestry, environmental monitoring and urban planning, placing the mission firmly within the domain of remote sensing.

This flight was notable as the first far-sea launch by a private commercial rocket in the East China Sea waters of the Yangtze River Delta region. Sea-based launch platforms are increasingly used because open-water operations allow wider safety corridors for falling rocket stages, greater flexibility in choosing launch trajectories and reduced risk to populated areas.

Gravity-1 has a track record of steady progress: it achieved its first successful flight in January 2024 and a second in October 2025. Orienspace is now developing larger liquid-fuel launch vehicles named Gravity-2 and Gravity-3, signalling ambitions to compete in the heavier-payload segment traditionally dominated by state agencies and a handful of global private players.
