IIT Kanpur to Set Up Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence 'ECOGEN' under UP Policy 2024

India's clean-energy research got a major boost as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur announced on 20 July 2026 that it will establish a Centre of Excellence on Green Hydrogen named the Centre of Excellence on Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen, or ECOGEN. The proposal has been approved by the Uttar Pradesh government and sanctioned by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024.
Understanding green hydrogen is key to appreciating the centre's importance. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by splitting water through electrolysis using electricity from renewable sources such as solar or wind power. It is classified as a low-carbon fuel because its production route avoids the direct carbon-dioxide emissions associated with fossil-fuel-based hydrogen. This makes it a promising clean fuel for hard-to-electrify sectors such as steel, fertilisers, refining and heavy transport.
The scope of ECOGEN is deliberately broad, spanning the entire green hydrogen value chain. The centre will focus on research and innovation across hydrogen generation, storage, transportation, safety standards, testing, demonstrations and industrial use. A crucial part of its mandate is to work on reducing the production cost of green hydrogen, which today remains the biggest barrier to large-scale adoption.
The centre also has a clear academic and policy purpose. Its stated objective is to strengthen India's clean-energy research base and support Uttar Pradesh's net-zero emissions goal. By anchoring cutting-edge research within a premier institution, the initiative aims to build both the knowledge and the trained manpower that India's emerging hydrogen economy will need.
On leadership and institutional design, Dr. Prabodh Bajpai, Professor in the Sustainable Energy Engineering Department at IIT Kanpur, will serve as the Principal Investigator. The initiative is closely linked to state-level renewable-energy planning in Uttar Pradesh and to IIT Kanpur's institutional research capacity. Earlier, on 16 December 2025, the UP government also approved a separate joint Centre of Excellence for Green Hydrogen involving IIT Kanpur and Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU).
Strategically, ECOGEN fits into India's larger National Green Hydrogen Mission ambition of making the country a global hub for green-hydrogen production and export.
