India Flags Off Its First Hydrogen-Powered Train

India took a major stride toward green mobility on 17 July 2026 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country's first hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana. Running on the 89-kilometre Jind–Sonipat route with 12 intermediate stops, the train marks the entry of Indian Railways into the elite club of nations operating zero-emission rail transport, where its only by-product is harmless water vapour.

The train is a proud product of indigenous engineering, designed and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Each driving power car houses a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, delivering a combined output of 2,400 kW. To sustain daily operations, Indian Railways has commissioned a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind — a critical piece of infrastructure, since the absence of a hydrogen supply chain has long been the biggest hurdle for such projects worldwide.

The programme is anchored in the "Hydrogen for Heritage" initiative, launched in 2023 to deploy hydrogen trains on selected heritage and hilly routes. Beyond the environmental gains, the move carries strong strategic and economic significance: it reduces India's dependence on imported diesel, strengthens energy security, and positions the country as a manufacturing hub for next-generation rolling stock. It is also expected to generate skilled employment in fuel-cell manufacturing, hydrogen production, and specialised maintenance.

Globally, hydrogen trains are still an emerging technology.
