The Indian Railways approved two major infrastructure projects worth ₹381 crore on 10 July 2026 to strengthen railway safety and locomotive maintenance. The projects cover the deployment of the Kavach Version 4.0 automatic train protection system and additional homing facilities for electric locomotives, marking a further push in the nationwide roll-out of indigenous rail safety technology.

Kavach is India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. It is designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and head-on collisions by automatically applying brakes when a loco-pilot fails to respond to signals or over-speeds. The system was developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and was earlier known as the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS).

The first project, worth ₹206 crore, will deploy Kavach 4.0 across 680 route kilometres in the Delhi Division of Northern Railway, covering the Rewari–Delhi and Shakurbasti–Bathinda sections along with their feeder branch lines. The second project, worth ₹175 crore, provides additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power Diesel Shed in Raipur under South East Central Railway.

These approvals form part of the wider modernisation drive of Indian Railways. As of March 2026, about 3,103 route kilometres had already been equipped with Kavach, with further deployment planned in the Ambala and Ahmedabad Divisions. Homing facilities are used for stabling and maintaining locomotives at designated sheds, thereby improving operational reliability in both freight and passenger services on high-density corridors.
