Indian Railways Becomes World’s Second-Most Electrified Network
Indian Railways reached 99.6% electrification of its broad-gauge network as of 22 July 2026, positioning it as the world’s second-most electrified large railway system. Only Switzerland, with 100% electrification, ranks ahead. The figure was placed before the Lok Sabha by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, underlining the scale of a transformation that has accelerated sharply over the past decade.
Railway electrification means running trains using electric traction, typically through overhead equipment, instead of diesel locomotives. Over the years Indian Railways has extended electrification across trunk routes, branch lines and dedicated freight corridors under a phased, network-wide programme, steadily reducing reliance on imported diesel fuel.
The pace of change is best captured by the numbers. Between 2014 and 2026, Indian Railways electrified 48,072 route kilometres — more than double the 21,801 route kilometres electrified in the six decades before 2014. This dramatic acceleration reflects sustained policy focus, higher capital investment and integrated project planning across railway divisions.
The energy transition has delivered tangible results. Diesel consumption for train operations fell from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25 — a reduction of nearly 185 crore litres. This lowers the country’s dependence on imported fuel, cuts the import bill, and reduces the carbon footprint of one of the world’s largest transport networks.
Electrification is complemented by a push into renewable energy. By June 2026, Indian Railways had commissioned over 1,260 MW of renewable capacity, including about 1,161 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind power. All new railway line and multi-tracking projects are now sanctioned and built with integrated electrification infrastructure, embedding sustainability into future expansion.
The strategic and environmental significance is considerable. Rail transport emits roughly 89% less carbon dioxide per tonne-kilometre than road transport, so shifting freight and passengers to an electrified rail network supports India’s climate commitments and energy security. It also strengthens the case for rail as the backbone of a low-carbon, cost-efficient logistics system for a growing economy.
