PM Modi Launches Development Projects in Chandigarh (2026): Health & Road Infrastructure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a set of development projects in Chandigarh on 17 July 2026, spanning healthcare, education and road infrastructure. The package brought together new hospital facilities at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and major highway works tied to the Tricity Ring Road network.

On the healthcare side, the Prime Minister inaugurated a 300-bed Advanced Mother and Child Centre and an Advanced Neurosciences Centre at PGIMER. The former is dedicated to maternal and child healthcare, while the latter offers integrated neurology, neurosurgery and neuro-critical care. A foundation stone was also laid for a 150-bed Critical Care Block under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), a central-sector scheme launched in 2021 to strengthen India's health infrastructure. PGIMER itself, established in 1962, is a premier tertiary-care and teaching hospital.

On roads, the package included three National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects worth ₹5,278 crore that form the final links of the 244-km Tricity Ring Road, estimated to cost around ₹12,000 crore. The 31.23-km IT City–Kurali Greenfield Corridor, a six-lane road built at ₹1,936 crore, was formally inaugurated. Foundation stones were laid for the 19.2-km Zirakpur–Panchkula bypass (reported value ₹1,878 crore) and the 10.3-km PR-7 Spur (reported value ₹1,464 crore).

Chandigarh, a Union Territory and the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, is famous for its planned urban design associated with Le Corbusier. The Tricity region it anchors comprises Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.
